Cable pull through

Cable pull-through uses a standing hip-hinge motion to work your hips and the backs of your thighs. It helps you build strength and become more comfortable with bending at the hips for everyday movement. You need no equipment, so it is easy to practise almost anywhere.

From a standing position, the movement centres on folding at the hips and returning upright while your legs stay planted. You should mainly feel the effort through your hips and along the backs of your thighs, with your stomach and lower back working to keep your middle steady.

Choose it when you want to practise a useful hip-hinge pattern without equipment or floor work. It builds strength through your hips and the backs of your thighs while asking your middle to stay steady. Because you remain standing and use only your body, it can suit simple home workouts and small spaces.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and your arms hanging naturally in front of you.

  2. Bend your knees slightly while keeping your feet planted firmly on the floor.

  3. Push your hips backwards as your upper body tips forwards and your hands move between your legs.

  4. Continue until you feel a comfortable stretch along the backs of your thighs.

  5. Bring your hips forwards as you return your upper body to an upright position.

  6. Finish standing tall with your arms relaxed in front of you.
