Barbell overhead triceps extension

The barbell overhead triceps extension moves a bar above and behind your head by bending and straightening your elbows, working the backs of your upper arms. It helps you build arm strength for pressing and reaching overhead while keeping the movement focused around one joint.

Holding a bar overhead keeps the movement centred on bending and straightening your elbows while your upper arms remain near your head. You should feel the effort mainly along the backs of your upper arms, often with a noticeable stretch near the top of that area when the bar travels behind you. The barbell lets both arms work together.

Choose it when you want focused work for the backs of your upper arms and strength that supports pushing and overhead tasks. Using one bar gives your hands a fixed shared position, so it suits you if that grip feels natural. You will want shoulders and elbows that are comfortable with the overhead position and loaded bending.

How to do it

  1. Stand upright with your feet about hip-width apart, holding the barbell in front of your shoulders.

  2. Press the barbell overhead until your arms are straight, with your hands about shoulder-width apart.

  3. Keep your upper arms beside your head, with your elbows pointing forward.

  4. Bend your elbows to lower the barbell behind your head, leaving your upper arms in place.

  5. Straighten your elbows to bring the barbell back overhead, keeping your upper arms steady.
