Weightlifting belt
A weightlifting belt wraps firmly around your waist and fastens with a buckle, lever or hook-and-loop strap. It is usually made from stiff leather or flexible fabric, with a broad section around your middle. When secured, it gives you a solid surface to press your stomach and sides against, so heavy movements can feel more contained and deliberate.
You wear it during strength training, particularly for squats, deadlifts and overhead lifts that ask you to keep your middle steady. The belt does not hold you upright by itself; instead, it provides feedback as you tighten your middle and control your breathing. It can help you practise creating consistent support when handling loads that feel demanding.
It suits you if you already feel comfortable with basic lifting technique and want extra feedback during heavier efforts. It takes almost no storage space, though getting the fit and tightness right may take some practice. Different fastenings vary in how quickly they adjust. For lighter training, simply moving with a manageable load and no belt is a practical alternative.
