Weighted jump rope

A weighted jump rope looks much like a standard skipping rope, but extra resistance comes from the rope itself, the handles, or both. As you turn it, you feel more pull through your hands, shoulders and upper back, while each jump still asks for light, steady footwork. The slower feedback can make the rope easier to sense as it travels around you.

You can use it for short bouts of rhythmic jumping, coordination practice, or a lively addition to a general workout. The added resistance makes each turn more deliberate, so you can practise basic two-foot jumps, alternating feet, and gentle side-to-side patterns without needing complex routines. It works your legs through the jumps and keeps your arms and shoulders involved in maintaining the rope’s path.

It can suit you if you feel comfortable with basic skipping and want a little more resistance without using a large machine. You need clear floor space, plus enough room overhead and beside you for the rope to turn safely. Scaling is easiest when the added load is removable; otherwise, slow the pace or use a standard skipping rope while you learn the timing.
