Thigh abductor machine

You sit in a padded seat with your back supported and the outsides of your knees resting against two movable pads. Starting with your legs closer together, you press the pads outward against smooth resistance. The guided path can feel steady and contained, while a pin or dial usually changes how hard the movement feels.

This machine is mainly used to build strength around the outer thighs and sides of your hips. It lets you practise opening your legs while staying seated and supported, which can make it easier to focus on a controlled movement. That strength can support everyday activities that involve stepping sideways, changing direction or keeping steady on one leg.

It can suit you if you are new to strength training or prefer equipment that guides your movement. The machine has a fairly large fixed footprint, so it is more common in gyms than homes. Adjust the seat and starting position so you feel supported, then choose manageable resistance. A looped resistance band around your legs offers a compact alternative.
