Strongman log

Large and deliberately awkward, a strongman log has a thick cylindrical body with two handles set inside cut-outs. You hold it with your palms facing each other, while the wide shell keeps the load away from your body. It feels less predictable than a barbell and asks you to control its size as well as its load.

Used mainly for whole-body strength, the log can be lifted from the floor to your lap, brought to your chest and pressed overhead. You can also use it for carries and controlled pulls towards your body. These movements involve your legs, hips, back, shoulders and arms, while the unusual shape helps you practise balance and steady handling.

It suits you if you already feel comfortable lifting simpler objects and want to explore a bulkier challenge. Many logs accept added plates, so the load can change, but the empty log may still feel substantial. Allow plenty of clear floor and overhead space, and learn the movement with guidance. A firmly closed backpack can offer a gentler way to practise lifting and carrying.
