Squat rack

A squat rack is a sturdy metal frame with upright posts and adjustable hooks that hold a bar at a comfortable starting height. You step inside or just in front of it, lift the bar from the hooks, and return it when finished. Using one can feel more organised and secure than lifting a bar from the floor, though careful setup still matters.

It supports bar-based strength training, especially squats, but also gives you a useful starting point for shoulder presses and other standing movements. Adjustable safety rails can catch the bar if you cannot complete a movement, while the hooks let you begin without first lifting from ground level. The open frame leaves room to change your stance and move at a controlled pace.

It suits you if you want to build confidence with a bar and have enough room for a tall, heavy frame, a bench, and clear space around it. Hook and rail heights are usually simple to adjust, and you can scale the effort by using an empty bar or lighter loads. For simpler home training, sturdy dumbbells can cover many similar movements with less space.
