Row bar

With a solid metal frame and one or more grip positions, a row bar clips to a cable machine or similar resistance system. You hold it with both hands and pull it towards you, so the resistance feels steady and guided. Depending on its shape, your hands may face down, towards each other, or at a slight angle.

You use a row bar for pulling movements that involve your upper back, shoulders and arms. From a seated or standing position, you can draw the bar towards your ribs, chest or waist, depending on the cable height. Different hand positions add variety while the cable keeps tension through the movement and lets you practise a smooth, controlled pull.

A row bar suits beginners and intermediate users who have access to a cable machine and want a stable two-handed grip. The attachment itself is compact, though the machine needs dedicated floor space. Resistance is usually simple to adjust on the machine. Before starting, become comfortable with the pulling path and your posture. A resistance band secured to a suitable anchor is a practical alternative.
