Plate weight

Flat and round, a plate weight usually has a central hole for sliding onto a bar. Some also have handholds around the edge. It may be metal or coated in rubber, and its broad shape feels different from a dumbbell: you guide it with both hands or grip the rim, keeping it close and controlled.

You can use a plate for straightforward strength and whole-body movement. Hold it near your chest while squatting or stepping, press it overhead, lift it in front of you, rotate gently from side to side, or carry it as you walk. A compatible plate can also add resistance to a bar or suitable machine.

This suits you if you want one simple load that can support several movements, especially if you are comfortable holding a wide object securely. Plates store fairly flat, though you need clear floor space and a safe place to keep them. Choosing a lighter plate makes movements easier to learn; a loaded backpack or large water bottle offers a more familiar starting point.
