Olympic barbell
An Olympic barbell is a long steel bar with thicker, rotating ends that hold round plates. Its length and solid feel can seem unfamiliar at first, and even the empty bar has noticeable weight. You grip the textured sections with both hands, while the spinning ends help the plates turn more smoothly as you lift.
You can use it for steady strength training across much of your body. It supports movements where you lift from the floor, hold the bar at your shoulders, press it overhead, or squat with it supported across your upper back. Adding or removing plates lets you change the load, while a rack can make some starting positions easier to manage.
It suits you if you want one tool for learning several strength movements and have room to handle a long bar safely. Plates make the load adjustable, though the empty bar may be too heavy for some beginners. Start by learning the movement with guidance and clear floor space. A lighter training bar, dumbbells, or even a broom handle can be a more approachable alternative.
