Monkey bar

An overhead row of evenly spaced bars gives you a firm series of handholds, usually fixed within a sturdy frame. Using it feels different from holding a single bar because you move from one grip to the next. Your body hangs below, so steady hands, comfortable shoulders and controlled swinging help you feel secure.

You can use monkey bars to build grip strength and control through your shoulders, arms and middle. Moving hand over hand trains you to support yourself while travelling sideways or forwards. You can also practise simply hanging, stepping between low bars, or holding your knees raised, depending on your confidence and the frame’s design.

Monkey bars suit you if you enjoy playful, whole-body movement and want to become more comfortable supporting your own body. They need clear space underneath and around the frame, and fixed bars are not usually adjustable. Start with your feet supported on a step or low platform. A doorway bar offers a more compact alternative for hanging, though not for travelling between grips.
