Jump rope

Light in your hands, a jump rope has two handles joined by a flexible cord that passes over your head and under your feet. Using it feels springy and rhythmic, though finding the timing can take practice. The handles should turn comfortably without a tight grip, while the cord gives you a clear sense of each swing.

It is mainly used for lively, whole-body movement that builds stamina, rhythm and coordination. You swing the cord continuously and make small jumps as it reaches your feet, with room to vary your pace or alternate your footing. It can add an energetic section to a home workout, or provide a simple way to practise moving lightly and steadily.

It suits you if you enjoy rhythmic movement and want equipment that stores easily. You need enough clear floor space and overhead room for the cord, along with a surface where you feel secure landing. Many ropes can be shortened to fit, and you can scale the activity by slowing down or stepping over each turn. Marching or small hops without a rope are useful alternatives.
