Hip abductor machine
With a padded seat, a backrest and two cushioned pads beside your outer thighs, the hip abductor machine keeps you supported while your legs move apart. You usually begin with your knees closer together and press outward against steady resistance. The guided path can feel controlled and straightforward, though the movement may be unfamiliar at first.
You use it to practise opening your legs out to the sides while keeping your upper body still. This works the muscles around the sides of your hips and supports general lower-body strength for walking, climbing stairs and other everyday movement. The seat and pads give you a stable way to focus on that motion.
It can suit you if you prefer seated, guided exercise or are learning to control movement at your hips. Resistance is usually easy to adjust, so you can begin at a comfortable level and move slowly. The machine takes up considerable floor space and is mostly found in gyms; at home, try standing side leg lifts while holding a sturdy chair.
