Heavy bag
A heavy bag hangs from a sturdy ceiling mount or frame and gives you a firm, padded target for punches and kicks. It is usually tall and cylindrical, with enough mass to swing when struck. Using one feels active and rhythmic, though the impact can be noisy and demanding on your hands, wrists and shoulders.
You can use it to practise basic boxing or kickboxing movements while building coordination, timing and whole-body stamina. It lets you combine straight punches, hooks, knee strikes and kicks into flowing sequences, or simply work on one movement at a comfortable pace. Because the bag moves, you also learn to adjust your position and stay balanced as you strike.
It suits you if you enjoy energetic, skill-based movement and have room for the bag to hang and swing freely. A filled bag is awkward to move and needs a secure mount. Height is usually straightforward to adjust, and you can scale the effort through gentler strikes. Start with guidance, hand wraps and gloves. If space or noise is limited, shadowboxing gives you a simple no-equipment alternative.
