Gym ball

Soft, springy and slightly unstable, a gym ball is a large inflatable sphere that shifts gently beneath you. You can sit, lean, lie or place your hands and feet on it, depending on the movement. Its firm but cushioned surface feels supportive, while the rolling shape asks you to stay aware of your position.

It is often used for gentle strength, balance and mobility training. Sitting or lying on the ball can add movement to familiar exercises for your stomach, back, hips and legs. You can also use it against a wall for supported squats, beneath your legs for bridges, or as a surface for stretching and relaxed movement.

It suits you if you want adaptable home equipment and do not mind learning to steady yourself. The ball is light but bulky, so it needs clear floor space and somewhere to store it. You can make movements easier by keeping more of your body on the floor or using a wall. A sturdy chair can replace it for some seated or supported movements.
