Exercise mat

An exercise mat gives you a lightly padded, non-slip surface for floor-based movement. It is usually long enough for you to lie down, and thin enough to feel stable rather than soft and wobbly. The cushioning makes contact with hard flooring more comfortable for your back, knees, hands and elbows, while the grippy finish helps the mat stay in place.

You can use it for gentle strength work, stretching, balance practice and warm-ups. For a basic crunch, the mat supports your back as you lie with your knees bent and lift your shoulders slightly from the floor. It also creates a clear, comfortable area for movements done sitting, kneeling, lying down or supporting yourself on your hands.

It suits you if you want a simple way to make floor exercises more inviting at home or in a shared exercise space. It takes up little room when rolled or folded and needs no adjustment; you scale the activity by choosing movements that feel manageable. Start on a level, uncluttered floor. A folded blanket can work instead, though it may slide or bunch.
