Elliptical trainer
An elliptical trainer has two large pedals that travel in a smooth oval path, usually with upright handles that move with you. Your feet stay supported as you glide rather than step onto the floor. The motion can feel unfamiliar at first, but it soon becomes steady and rhythmic when you find a comfortable pace.
You can use it for gentle warm-ups, longer steady sessions, or shorter periods of quicker and easier movement. Changing the resistance makes each stride feel lighter or more demanding, while some machines also let you alter the slope or travel backwards. Holding the moving handles brings your arms and shoulders into the motion, while fixed grips offer a simpler option.
It suits you if you enjoy continuous indoor movement and want a pace that is easy to change. Start slowly while you get used to stepping on, coordinating the handles and keeping your body relaxed. It takes up a fair amount of floor space and needs room around the moving parts. A brisk walk is a straightforward alternative when you prefer to exercise outside.
