Dumbbell

Compact and handheld, a dumbbell has a short grip with an equal load at each end. You can use one or a pair while standing, seated, lying on a bench or working from the floor. It feels less fixed than a machine, so you guide the path yourself and can move each arm separately.

You can use dumbbells to build strength through your arms, shoulders, chest, upper back and hands. They allow pressing overhead or from a bench, rowing toward your body, raising your arms in different directions, and bending or straightening your elbows and wrists. Using two also helps you notice differences between your sides.

Dumbbells suit beginners and experienced exercisers because you can start with a manageable load and change it as movements become more familiar. They need little storage space, although a wider range of loads takes more room. Adjustable versions are easy to scale, while filled water bottles can work as a simple alternative for lighter movements.
