Bumper plate

Thick, round and rubber-covered, bumper plates slide onto the ends of a barbell. Unlike many metal plates, different loads usually share the same broad diameter, while their thickness varies. They feel solid but slightly less harsh when they meet the floor, and their raised edges can make them easier to grip and roll into position.

You can use bumper plates for barbell exercises such as lifting from the floor, squatting and pressing overhead. Their rubber covering allows you to return the bar to suitable flooring with less noise and impact than bare metal plates. You can also hold a plate by itself for carries, gentle turns or controlled movements in front of your body.

They suit you if you want to learn barbell movements, particularly those that begin at floor level, and prefer a quieter, more forgiving landing than bare metal provides. Plates are simple to add or remove, though the bar, storage and clear floor area take space. Start on suitable flooring and secure them with collars. For simpler home training, a sturdy backpack filled evenly can provide resistance.
