Barbell collars
Barbell collars are compact fasteners that sit on the ends of a bar, outside the plates. You slide, clamp or twist them into place so the plates stay together as the bar moves. They feel simple to handle, though different locking styles need slightly different pressure, and a secure collar should sit firmly without wobbling.
You use collars whenever you train with plates on a barbell, including movements from the floor, pressing, squatting or carrying the bar. By limiting sideways plate movement, they help the bar feel more predictable when you lift, lower or reposition it. They are removed between plate changes, then refitted and checked before you begin moving again.
They suit anyone using a bar with removable plates, from a beginner learning basic movements to someone with an established routine. Collars take almost no storage space and are quick to put on once you know the fastening method. Check that they match your bar, and practise fastening them on an unloaded bar. Household substitutes may not grip reliably.
